Psalm 133:1

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Now THERE is something to sing about! In a world full of discord and dispute, where every voice thinks itself to be the finest on earth (when in fact most wouldn’t even pass an “American Idol” Entrance Exam), to find a people who are all in tune and on the same spiritual page; yes, that would be something worth singing about. To have us all DWELL in unity, abide there? WOW.

Some people despair; that unity will ever be achieved. Some people believe that it is an idealists dream. After all, how many times have you found your peace destroyed by the entrance of someone else who is ‘out of step’ with your spiritual tempo? On the other hand, how many times have you blindly blundered into a room where the Presence of God was on a person, never realizing that a Holy conversation was going on with Creator and Created. We just don’t see it.

I believe that UNITY IS A MUST if we are ever to see the full Glory of God flowing from our lives. Unity is the sweet honey of the Spirit. It begins when man becomes ONE with the GOD. Indeed, every individual must become one with the Almighty. Individuals that all are one with God more easily become one with each other in Spirit. Scripture says:

Ephesians 4:3
Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

The unity of the Spirit is granted to us by God as we draw nigh unto him. That is a given. But the MAINTAINING of the unity of the Spirit between ‘anointed’ saints must be ‘kept’ by the saints. How can two walk together except they agree? It is a fair question. The answer is: They can walk in the Spirit, live in the Spirit. People who are fulfilling the Galatians 5 mandate to be spiritual, love ‘hanging’ with people who are spiritual; and peace follows all who endeavor to be IN THE SPIRIT. It bonds the spiritual with the spiritual in perfect unity.

The non-idealist, the skeptic and those who have been damaged by disunity often will say: ‘But you can’t get two people to agree on anything! Everyone has an opinion! Everyone believes their point of view!’ True, they are partially correct in their cry of anguish; after all, we have NOT yet come into the UNITY OF THE FAITH. As the verse declares, “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13), we are just not there, YET.

But we will get there. How do I know? Because in John 17 at the closing stages of the ministry of Christ, Christ prayed to the Father that we would be ONE! He is OUR INTERCESSOR, and God has never left one of Christ’s prayers unanswered. Christ’s WILL will be done. Today, unity of the Spirit! Tomorrow, unity of the FAITH of the whole Body of Christ. Amen. Let’s sing!
