The Linguistic Weight of Testing
In the original language of the New Testament, the word often translated as "test" or "try" is dokimazo. This wasn't a casual glance. It was a term used by metallurgists to test the purity of gold or silver by fire. It means to examine with the expectation of finding what is genuine.
There is a vital distinction between "judging" (the act of condemnation) and "discerning" (the act of distinguishing). To judge is to pronounce a sentence; to discern is to separate the wheat from the chaff. We must move beyond the "dirt in the vase", those small compromises that cloud our vision, and return to the foundational scales of Scripture.
1. The Christological Test
