Have you ever stood beneath a velvet midnight sky, overwhelmed by the crushing weight of your own smallness? Have you ever stared into the abyss of your personal trials: anxiety clawing at your chest, betrayal cutting deep into your soul, or doubt whispering lies in the dark: and wondered if God is simply too distant to notice? Have you ever felt that your prayers bounce off the ceiling, reduced to nothing by the sheer silence of the cosmos?
In our hurried lives, we easily shrink the Almighty. We domesticate the Creator into a manageable companion, tailoring Him to fit neatly inside our earthly anxieties and petty grievances. But when the enemy of your soul tries to convince you that your burdens are too heavy for heaven to hold, or that you are marooned on an insignificant speck of dust in a cold universe, we must look upward and remember who hath fashioned the heavens.
As we pursue growing in faith and deepening faith through sound biblical teaching, we discover an anchor for our souls. This timeless meditation, originally penned by Pastor Anthony Joseph Massotti, Th.M. on January 16, 2000, draws us back to the magnificent, mind-numbing reality of our Creator. It is an invitation found in our spiritual growth resources to expand our view of God and steady our christian walk with christ.
The Immeasurable Cosmos: Beyond a Hundred Billion Galaxies
Consider the physical universe that surrounds us. Modern astronomy tells us that the observable cosmos contains upwards of a hundred billion galaxies. Think upon that number for a moment. Within just one typical galaxy, there are roughly one hundred billion stars, spanning a hundred thousand light-years across.
More than a million Earths would fit inside our Sun alone: yet our Sun is merely an average-sized star among trillions. And what is our sun compared to the gargantuan giants of deep space? When we gaze through our strongest telescopes, we cannot find the bottom of the celestial depths. The universe stretches out infinitely further than our instruments can measure.
Yet Scripture reminds us that God spans the heavens with the span of His hand (Isaiah 40:12). He did not sweat to fling those galaxies into motion. He did not draft blueprints or struggle against the friction of void. He simply spoke: "Let there be light": and light exists. Wavelengths, frequencies, gravity, and every measurable physical phenomenon obey because GOD SAID IT.
When we evaluate the majesty of the Creator through the lens of sound biblical teaching, we realize that either God is sovereign over every inch of this staggering expanse, or He is no God at all. There is no middle ground. Either He holds the stars in their courses, or we are orphans drifting in chaos. Choose Life. Rest in His absolute sovereignty.
The Microscopic Abyss: Where Science Stops, God Begins
Turn your gaze now from the staggering macrocosm to the unfathomable microcosm. God is not only the God of the hundred billion galaxies; He is equally the God of the infinitely small.
Dive into the molecular universe. The best physicists and quantum chemists, with all their advanced machinery, cannot get to the bottom of invisible space. They split atoms only to find subatomic particles behaving with divine mystery. They look deeper and find an intricate architecture holding matter together by forces science still struggles to fully explain.
Consider the oceans of our planet: so deep, dark, and pressurized that human submersibles have barely scratched their hidden floors. Vast ecosystems thrive in pitch-black trenches under crushing weight, sustained by hydrothermal vents that defy our conventional understanding of life.
And look closer still: the DNA structure. Within every microscopic cell of living flesh lies a biological code containing astronomical permutations of information. Who wrote that code? Who authored the complex linguistic alphabet of genetics? It was the finger of God.
If God can orchestrate the precise atomic bonds of every molecule in your body while simultaneously spinning a hundred billion galaxies across the dark, can He not handle the intricate details of your broken heart?
As we reflect on these truths in our blog, we must confront our doubts. The enemy whispers that your pain is hidden, that your silent tears fall on deaf ears. But Scripture declares that He numbers the very hairs of your head (Matthew 10:30). The God who governs the subatomic realm is intimately acquainted with your deepest sorrow.
A Linguistic Distinction: Knowing Versus Experiencing God
In our spiritual journey, there is a profound difference between knowing about God intellectually and experiencing His vastness personally. In biblical Greek, we see a vital distinction between ginosko (experiential, relational knowledge gained through intimate encounter) and eido (mere factual perception).
Many believers possess eido regarding God: they know the doctrines, they can quote verses, they attend services. But what God desires for your christian walk with christ is ginosko. He wants you to experience His power not as an abstract theological concept, but as a living, breathing reality that anchors your soul in the storm.
When we look at the breathtaking design of creation, we must ask ourselves: Should it surprise us that the love of God is so deep and unknowable? Should it shock us that the heavenly realm has not fully entered the natural heart of man apart from the revealing work of the Spirit? Is it so hard to accept that the Spirit's gifts and grace are infinitely beyond anything we have witnessed in two thousand years?
Our minds are finite vessels trying to contain an infinite ocean. When we try to fit the Almighty into our human boxes, we commit intellectual and spiritual idolatry. We must surrender our need for complete comprehension and embrace holy awe.
Private Reflection and Prayer
In my own quiet moments of exhaustion and spiritual warfare, I often bow my head and whisper a simple prayer:
"Lord God of the hundred billion galaxies, forgive my tiny, cramped view of Your power. When the storms rage and the enemy seeks to overwhelm my thoughts with fear, remind me that the same voice that called the stars into being also called my name. Strip away my self-reliance, humble my pride, and fill my soul with a fresh, consuming awe of Your majesty. In Jesus' name, Amen."
This is the heart behind our statements of faith: that God is supreme, unsearchable, and infinitely glorious.
GOD IS BIG! GOD DOES BIG! GOD LOVES BIG! GET USED TO IT!!
If you are walking through a valley of deep darkness today, stop measuring your problems against your own strength. Measure your problems against the God who hung the cosmos in empty space.
YOU must choose to lift your eyes. YOU must reject the paralyzing lies of the enemy. YOU must anchor your faith in the unshakable Rock of Ages.
Do not cower before your trials. Do not let fear dictate your steps. Step out in bold, unwavering trust. GOD IS BIG! GOD DOES BIG! GOD LOVES BIG! GET USED TO IT!!
