"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20)
Do you truly like the person you see staring back at you in the mirror? When the firebrand of emotional devastation sweeps through your life, do you find your foundation crumbling into the ash of self-doubt? Have you ever felt the cold sting of betrayal and wondered if your very existence was a mistake? In those moments of decision-making dilemmas, where the path forward is shrouded in the fog of uncertainty, do you know who you are?
We have all stood at that precipice. We have all looked into the abyss of our own inadequacies and felt the "accuser of the brethren" whisper that we are nothing more than a collection of failures. But there is a transformative Truth that the Enemy desperately wants to hide from your eyes: your identity is not a sum of your experiences, but a reflection of your Creator.
The Divine Confidence of the Christ
Consider the life of Jesus. From the moment He stepped onto the stage of human history, He possessed a quality that often eludes us: total, unwavering confidence in His identity. At the tender age of twelve, while we might have been lost in the trifles of youth, He knew He had to be about His Father’s business (Luke 2:49).
When He stood at the edge of the wilderness at age thirty, He did not shrink from the temptation that awaited Him. He went in knowing He was the Beloved Son, and He emerged victorious because He knew who had called Him. He preached the Truth with a piercing clarity, indifferent to the bruised egos of religious elites. He chose disciples, His "trumpets", who were flawed and loud, yet He remained unshakeable even when they stumbled.
Finally, at the age of thirty-three and a half, as He walked toward the hill of Golgotha to endure a torture beyond human comprehension, He did not yield to the poison of bitterness. He did not get mad. He stayed the course. How?
Pastor Anthony Joseph Massotti, Th.M. observes that this kind of endurance is impossible "unless you have total confidence in who you are." Jesus did not fail because He chose to believe what the Scriptures said about Him. He chose to believe what His Father spoke over Him. He even drew strength from the words of Moses and Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:3).
The Dichotomy of the Call
In our journey of growing in faith, we are often presented with a stark, "either/or" scenario. You either believe in the Call that has been placed upon your life, or you believe in the Person who gave you the Call. There is no middle ground where the soul can find rest.
If you focus only on the Call, you will eventually be crushed by the weight of the assignment. But if you focus on the One who called you, the burden becomes light. We see this pattern woven throughout the tapestry of Holy Scripture:
- To be a Daniel: You must be willing to PRAY when the world decrees silence. You must be willing to bend the knee to God even when the lions are salivating at your feet. You must Believe, or you will fall asleep in the death of compromise.
- To be a David: You must be willing to PRAISE when you are hidden away on a desolate hillside, surrounded by nothing but the scent of stinky sheep. If you cannot be faithful in the pasture, you will never be fit for the palace.
- To be a Deborah: You must be willing to PROPHECY when the warriors around you are paralyzed by the specter of defeat. You must Believe, or you will be consumed by terror.
Each of these figures understood a vital linguistic distinction: they did not seek "identification" with the world; they sought their Identity in the Word. Identification is what the Enemy offers, a temporary mask of belonging based on what you do. Identity is what the Father bestows, an eternal seal of belonging based on whose you are.
The Warfare of Light and Shadows
We must recognize that we are in the midst of a cosmic struggle. The forces of Darkness are waging a relentless war against the forces of the Light. This is not a mere psychological battle; it is spiritual warfare. Either the Light of God will dispel the darkness in your mind, or the darkness will seek to engulf the Light within you.
The Enemy, the devil, operates as a wolf cloaked in sheep’s clothing, whispering that you are a "spiritual pauper" or a "beggar" at the table of Grace. He wants you to flee before your enemies seven ways (Deuteronomy 28:25). But when you know who you are in Christ, you can rise up and shout: "GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME!"
From the Seed to the Mighty Tree
Where do you stand today in your personal growth before the Lord? Perhaps your next step feels like a mountain peak hidden in the clouds, too high to reach, too steep to climb. But behold, the God who makes people walk on water is the same God who can lift your feet to high places.
Without God, you are but a tiny, fragile seed. You are vulnerable to the elements, easily overlooked, and seemingly insignificant. But when you are planted in God, nourished by the Living Water of His Word, and cared for by the Great Gardener, you become a MIGHTY TREE.
In this process, we must redefine our understanding of virtue. Often, we mistake "feeling humble" for true Humility. But as Pastor Anthony Joseph Massotti, Th.M. teaches, the opposite of Pride is not always a feeling of lowliness, it is Surrender and Obedience. Pride says, "I must do this in my own strength." Humility says, "I surrender to His strength."
Choosing confidence is not about puffing up the ego; it is about choosing Life and stopping the internal doubt that suggests God made a mistake when He called you.
Your Immediate Spiritual Action
The time for wandering in the wilderness of "who am I?" is over. The Father has already spoken the answer over your life through the sacrifice of His Son. You are chosen. You are redeemed. You are a wealthy saint in the kingdom of God.
As you navigate the noise of the digital age, let these truths be your anchor. Do not let the "dirt in the vase" of your past experiences cloud the water of your current identity.
Behold, the door is open. No man can shut it. Now, YOU must do something.
- STOP doubting the work of God in your soul.
- SURRENDER your reputation and your fears to the King of Kings.
- BELIEVE in God 100% and watch the shadows flee.
- GO and do what you know is RIGHT to do.
Take hope. Stand tall. In the end, when you walk in the full confidence of who you are in Christ, you will find that you finally like the person God created you to be.
